Backing on Ningbo, Daxie enjoys sophisticated transportation networks including water, land and air transportation systems.

1. Island-mainland transportation

Daxie sea-spanning highway and railway bridge began to open to traffic in April 2001, thus makes Daxie island become a peninsular in Daxie transportation history. The total investment of the bridge is about RMB yuan 450 million, it has four lanes in two directions, and it is the first one highway and railway are built on the same level.

2. Roads

Total road traffic mileage in Ningbo is about 5506 km, and the roads density is 58.8 km/hundred km2, and among which, the highway is 184 km, and Grade I and Grade II roads are 1040 km. An advanced roads transportation network radiating the whole country featured in half-an-hour-city-downtown-transportation-circle, one-hour-city-transportation-circle has been formed.

Ningbo is connected to Hangzhou and Shanghai in the north via Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway, and connected to Wenzhou, Fuzhou and Guangzhou in the south via Ningbo-Wenzhou-Taizhou Expressway.

It takes about 1.5 hours and 3.5 hours from Ningbo to Hangzhou and Shanghai respectively. With the completion of Hangzhou Bay bridge, the distance from Daxie to Shanghai will reduce 180 km, and it will take only about 2 hours from Daxie to Shanghai.

3. Railway

Daxie is connected to National railway network via Xiaoshan-Ningbo double track. The passenger passing capacity can meet the requirements of 13 couples trains, and the cargos throughput is 63 million tons.

Daxie railway section will start construction in 2003, and be completed in June 2005, and the designed transportation capacity is 20 million tons.

4. Aviation

It is about 40 km from Daxie to Ningbo Lishe Airport, a 4E level airport, with flights from Ningbo to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenyang, Xi抋n, Xiamen, Nanchang, Haikou, Shantou, Shenzhen, Changsha, Nanjing, Wenzhou, Kunming, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Zhuhai, Hefei, Huangshan, Guilin, Chongqing, Dalian, Qingdao, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Ha抏r抌in, Wulumuqi, and international flights to Hong Kong, Maocao, Kaoshiung, Bangkok, Fukuoka (Janpan), Korea, etc.

Moreover, Daxie is close to Xiaoshan International Airport, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, it takes about 1.5 to 3.5 hours from Daxie to these airports.

5. Port

Ningbo Port is one of the four deepest international transshipment ports. It has 132 berths of 500 or over 500 tonnages, and 17 berths of 50,0000 or over 50,000-tonnages , the largest 50,000 tonnage liquid chemical terminal in China, the dedicated fourth and fifth containers terminal, 200,000 tonnage iron ore terminal (which can be called by 300,000 DWT vessel) and 250,000 tonnage crude oil. And the frontier water depth of the third phase containers terminal is about 15 meters. Equipped with the large containers bridge crane with extending capacity of 60.5 metes, the containers terminal can be called by the largest containers vessel in the world. Ningbo Beilun port has opened more than 70 containers shipping lines, with 27 shipping lines to the East and West coast of America, Africa, South America, Middle East, and Europe, 24 shipping lines to Japan, Taiwan, South East Asia, and monthly flights are over 370.

Daxie Development Zone has a port annual handling capacity of 20 million tons with diversified dedicated berths of crude oil, liquid chemicals ranging from 5000 to 250,000 tonnages. Daxie containers terminal that can be called by the fifth and sixth generation containers vessels will start construction in June 2003, and be completed in 2005, with the annual handling capacity of 2 million TEU. Daxie passenger terminal has opened to traffic with high speed passenger ships bound for Putuo Mountain, Ninghai and Taohua island.

6. Hangzhou Bay Bridge

Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Bridge connecting Ningbo and Shanghai started construction on 8 June 2003, and plans to be completed in 2008. It is 36 km long with six expressway lanes in two directions, the designed speed is 100 km per hour, and the designed longevity is more than 100 years. The total investment of the bridge is RMB yuan 11.8 billion.

Ningbo Hangzhou Bay Bridge will cut the distance drastically among Shanghai, south of Jiangsu, and east south of Zhejiang province, and the distance between Ningbo and shanghai will be cut more than 180 km, thus forming the two hours transportation gold triangle of Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo.

The construction of Hangzhou bay bridge is a critical part of National Coastal Expressway, as well as a significant step for Ningbo and Zhejiang to merge into Large Shanghai Area, Yangtze River Delta triangle region and be in line with the world. It will further promote the economic, social exchange and cooperation among Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and plays an important role in accelerating the integration development of Yangtze River Delta triangle region, upgrading modernization and globalization, strengthening the regional economic competitiveness, constructing comparably rich society, realizing basically modernization before the schedule. The construction of the bridge has a significant practical and historical meaning.
